I first outline the background of the emergence of Translator Studies as a distinct subfield of Translation Studies, first with reference to three major “Turns” in Translation Studies, and then with reference to translation scholars’ increasing interest in explanatory research, beyond just description. I then discuss three examples of research in this subfield, illustrating three different dimensions: cultural, social and cognitive. These examples concern (1) transfiction, (2) ergonomic quality, and (3) the influence of the translator’s personality. I conclude with some consequences and questions.
